Welcome to this issue! This edition highlights tools for setting up private networks and productivity tools that might interest yo Set Up Private Networks Across DevicesImagine needing to access your home computer from work or stream home videos using mobile data. These tools can make it happen: WireGuard An open-source, high-performance VPN protocol focused on secure peer-to-peer (P2P) connections. It’s lightweight but lacks built-in NAT traversal or identity management, requiring additional configuration tools. Tailscale Built on WireGuard with easier setup, automatic NAT traversal, and multi-platform support. Although it’s not open-source by default, you can use HeadScale to self-host, blending Tailscale’s convenience with enhanced privacy and control. My go-to solution! Nebula An open-source tool from the Slack team supporting multiple platforms. It uses UDP hole punching to establish connections behind most firewalls or NATs, potentially delivering faster speeds. However, it lacks a desktop GUI and is configured via CLI. Netmaker A solution similar to Tailscale, offering a free community version. While it provides solid features, it doesn’t match Tailscale’s integration level or refined UI experience. Rustdesk An open-source alternative to TeamViewer with remote desktop capabilities. It’s self-hostable, written in Rust, and comes with a GUI. It also supports mobile platforms and allows remote service access via TCP tunneling. Additional ToolsZen A lightweight, free, and efficient ad blocker and privacy protector for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Written in Go, it sets up a proxy to intercept HTTP requests from all applications, blocking ads and tracking attempts. Cronicle A task scheduling and execution platform written in Node.js. It’s a database-free alternative to Cron with a web-based UI. Features include real-time stats, log viewing, retries, and shell command execution. A changelog generator written in Rust. It automatically generates customizable changelogs from Git history using flexible parsing rules. OpenBB A Python-based command-line investment analysis tool. It supports stocks, options, cryptocurrencies, forex, macroeconomics, and fixed income. With a well-designed GUI and support for libraries like Pandas, PyTorch, and TensorFlow, it enables advanced data analysis and investment insights. I’m a fan of this one! |
